How to Keep Flowers Fresh in Dubai's Heat
Cut flowers face a double challenge in Dubai: intense heat outside and continuous dry air conditioning inside. Left unmanaged, a fresh bouquet can begin wilting in as little as 48 hours. With a few precise adjustments, however, you can easily extend the life of your flowers to 5–7 days or longer.
Here is the practical, step-by-step guide to keeping your flowers fresh in Dubai’s climate.
1. The Angled Cut: Maximize Water Absorption
Before placing your flowers in a vase, trim 1–2 cm off the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle. Using a sharp pair of scissors or a clean knife prevents crushing the stem's vascular system.
Cutting at an angle increases the surface area for water intake and prevents the stem from sitting flat against the bottom of the vase, which blocks water flow.
2. Mind the AC Vents and Direct Sunlight
Where you place your bouquet in your apartment or villa makes a massive difference:
- Keep away from direct AC airflow: Air conditioning vents blow dry air that rapidly dehydrates delicate petals.
- Avoid direct sunlight: Even through double-glazed windows, direct Dubai sunlight creates heat pockets that accelerate blooming and wilting.
- Ideal spot: Choose a cool, well-lit area with ambient air circulation, well away from drafty windows or kitchen appliances.
3. Water Temperature & Hygiene
Bacterial growth in tap water is the primary cause of stems clogging and flowers drooping early.
- Use cool or lukewarm water: Never fill the vase with hot or warm tap water during summer. Cool water helps slow down the decay process.
- Change water every two days: Wash the vase thoroughly with mild soap before refilling it to remove lingering bacteria.
- Remove low-hanging leaves: Any leaves submerged below the waterline will decay quickly, breeding bacteria that ruin the entire arrangement.
4. Flower Food & Quick Household Fixes
Flower food packets provide carbohydrates to feed the bloom and a bactericide to keep the water clear. Always mix the food with the full recommended volume of water.
If you run out of flower food, adding a few drops of clear lemon-lime soda (for sugar) alongside 2-3 drops of clear household bleach per litre of water serves as an effective DIY preservative.
5. Special Care for Roses in Dubai
Roses are particularly sensitive to ambient heat. If you notice a rose guard petal (the outer, thicker petals) discoloring, gently peel it away to allow the inner bloom to open cleanly.
If your roses begin to droop prematurely, recut the stems underwater at a steep angle and submerge the entire stem in cool water for 30 minutes to revive water tension.
